Amphetamine Misuse and Amphetamine Addiction

Amphetamine abuse refers to the excessive and harmful use of the drug, leading to both physical and psychological problems. It is characterized by a strong craving for the drug, increased tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when abstaining. Common effects of misuse include increased energy, reduced appetite, insomnia, mood swings, and in severe cases, paranoia and hallucinations. Long-term use can result in serious health issues and social consequences.

Amphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant that increases alertness, energy, and concentration. While it is sometimes prescribed for medical conditions like ADHD or narcolepsy, it carries a high risk for abuse and dependence.

What is Amphetamine?

Amphetamine is a potent stimulant that affects the brain and nervous system and carries a high risk of addiction. It increases brain activity by boosting levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which results in heightened alertness, wakefulness, and energy.

While similar in effect to cocaine, amphetamine is synthesized chemically in labs, whereas cocaine is extracted from the coca plant. Its synthetic nature allows for large-scale production and high purity, making it widely used both legally and illegally.

There is also a stronger version of amphetamine, called methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, crystal meth, or speed. It can be found in powder, liquid, or crystal form. Meth causes a more intense and long-lasting high but is also significantly more addictive and considered one of the most dangerous illicit drugs.

The history of Amphetamine

Amphetamine was first synthesized in 1887, but its stimulating effects weren’t widely recognized until the 1920s. In the 1930s, it began to be marketed as a treatment for various conditions, including narcolepsy and hyperactivity. During World War II, military personnel used amphetamines to stay awake and alert.

By the 1950s and 60s, it became popular as a diet pill and performance enhancer, leading to widespread misuse and addiction. Due to its addictive nature and negative health effects, amphetamine was heavily regulated in the 1970s and classified as an illegal substance in many countries.

Today, amphetamine is still used medically in specific cases, but abuse and illicit trade remain global issues. In Sweden, it is the second most commonly used drug after cannabis.

Amphetamine Addiction – What Does it Mean?

behandling och terapi

Most people begin using amphetamines to enhance energy and performance, but it can quickly spiral into dependency. It can be difficult to distinguish between occasional use and true addiction.

Addiction often results from a complex interaction of genetics, past trauma, and social or environmental influences. It’s commonly associated with high-performance environments, making it harder to recognize the onset of addiction. Once dependency develops, behavior may change dramatically.

Symptoms may include:

To support individuals in recovery and the return to a healthy lifestyle, we offer various treatment options:

  • Therapy for processing trauma
  • Support groups to foster connection and understanding
  • Medication to manage withdrawal symptoms
  • Structured rehabilitation programs for lasting change

Together, these methods help break the cycle of addiction and support the journey toward a brighter future.

Use and Effects of Amphetamine

Amphetamine can be used in several ways depending on preference and availability. It is commonly taken as tablets or capsules. Some users snort the powder or dissolve it in liquid for injection, producing an immediate and intense high. Another method is “bombing”—wrapping the powder in a small paper package and swallowing it. This masks the taste and offers a slower release.

Amphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant that can remain active in the body for several hours, unlike cocaine’s shorter high (around 30 minutes).

People under the influence may have dilated pupils, a fixed stare, and difficulty staying still. Users report euphoria, increased awareness, and suppressed appetite. Blood pressure rises, the heart beats faster, and breathing quickens. Larger doses can result in fever, sweating, headaches, and dizziness. In extreme cases, amphetamine use can cause heart attacks or strokes.

Withdrawal from Amphetamine

The initial euphoric feelings—such as increased energy and enhanced focus—are short-lived and fade quickly, often after just a few days or weeks. Once that chemical high wears off, users are left with exhaustion and withdrawal symptoms.

The body and mind, having grown dependent on artificial stimulation, struggle to return to a natural state. This transition is both physically and mentally challenging, highlighting the dangers of amphetamine use.

Withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue and low motivation

Although difficult, these symptoms are not life-threatening and usually don’t require medical treatment—but professional support can be helpful during this phase.

Long-term Effects of Amphetamine Addiction

Amphetamine suppresses hunger, which often leads to significant weight loss. Dental problems are common due to reduced saliva production and jaw clenching. It may also affect balance and coordination, causing jerky movements and an unsteady walk. Injection use increases the risk of infections and complications.

Long-term use can have devastating effects on both body and mind. Users often experience persistent restlessness, insomnia, and emotional instability. Mental health rapidly deteriorates with increasing suspicion, irritability, and aggression—leading to conflicts and isolation.

Hallucinations, anxiety attacks, and paranoia become more frequent. In severe cases, amphetamine addiction may trigger acute psychosis, a condition requiring immediate hospitalization to protect the individual and those around them.
